Halloween

My day began with a gym session that had me questioning my life choices. I tackled back and shoulders with the enthusiasm of a cat facing a bath. After surviving the weights, I moved on to bodyweight exercises, focusing on abs and glutes—because who doesn’t want a rock-solid core and buns of steel? I wrapped it all up with some stretches, trying to convince my muscles that I still love them.

As evening rolled around, it was time for the club run. With no improvers group and a recharge week on the agenda, I joined the grads for a leisurely-paced run that felt just right. The Halloween spirit was in full swing, with everyone decked out in festive attire. I sported my favourite skull and roses leggings, adding a touch of spooky flair to the evening.

Bonus Rest Day - Operation Recharge!

Today’s an unexpected treat—a bonus rest day to recharge the batteries. Week 4 of my 10k plan calls for a bit of a break, so today was less “lifting heavy things” and more “how flexible can I get?”

Normally, I’d start the day by hitting the gym, focused on back and shoulders, and rounding things off with a bodyweight circuit and some solid stretching. By lunchtime, I’d lace up for an easy run along the canal, a gentle 45 to 60-minute trot to clear my head. And then, the best part—back to work for a quick shower and that delightful “I just ran at lunch” glow to carry me through the afternoon.

But today, it was all about taking it easy. I started with 30 minutes of mobilization and stretching. I’ve become a bit of a stretching evangelist, honestly. We underestimate the power of a good stretch—tight muscles can trigger all sorts of mysterious aches that seem to pop up out of nowhere. Plus, stretching is strangely relaxing, like giving your body a mini pep talk.

And then, the pièce de résistance: back to the hydrotherapy pool! I let the warm water jets work their magic on sore muscles (I may have squealed in delight—who doesn’t love a good muscle massage?). Then came my latest achievement: the 10-minute cold plunge. Trust me, it’s not for the faint-hearted. I’m still working on my relationship with the cold, but I’ve fought my way to a full 10 minutes.

Honestly, the cold plunge is a game-changer for rest days. It’s like hitting the refresh button for my muscles—a mix of shock and satisfaction. There’s that instant “why am I doing this?” moment, quickly followed by “wow, this actually feels kind of amazing.” It’s strangely refreshing, great for battling DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), and, oddly enough, it leaves me in a better mood afterward.

Tuesday Trials: Legs, Lungs, and the Trentham Trot

Ah, Tuesday! That one day of the week when my legs question every life choice I’ve ever made. You guessed it—it’s leg day. Cue the groans, because today’s lineup included the leg press, weighted lunges, leg extensions, and leg curls. But here’s the thing: I smashed it with three personal bests. That’s right, I might be hobbling tomorrow, but today I was queen of the leg press.

With legs feeling like they’d been through a cement mixer, it was time to tackle abs. I got up close and personal with hip lifts and planks before moving on to some good ol’ bodyweight moves to work the glutes and core. The glamour of it all, right? After that lot, I stretched it out with some yoga to convince my muscles not to go on strike.

Fast forward to the evening, and it was time for a trot with the Trentham Running Club’s improvers group. Because clearly, my legs hadn’t been through enough! This time, it was seven miles—complete with a time trial. Nothing like a bit of competitive spirit to remind me I’ve still got some juice left in the tank. Seven miles later, I was tired but buzzing, ready to (hopefully) walk tomorrow!

So, that’s Tuesday done—PBs, planks, and a solid seven miles with the Trentham gang. The legs may be complaining now, but they secretly love it. Sort of.

Unplanned plaster-ectomy

160 Days to Go: Half Marathon Training – Week 4 of 10k Training

Yes, you read that right. I signed up for a Half Marathon before I’d even tackled a 10k race. Clearly, caution isn’t my strong suit. But who wants a life without a bit of adventure?

Today was an “active rest day,” which in training terms means gentle movement and a bit of pampering for the body. I started off with some relaxing yoga stretches at the gym, fully leaning into the zen vibes... until an unexpected wardrobe mishap brought me crashing back to reality. Mid-hip-flexor stretch, I had no idea my plaster had wrinkled and somehow attached itself to the inside of my gym leggings. I only discovered this delightful surprise when I changed for the shower, resulting in a sudden, involuntary plaster-removal! Quite the wake-up call, I assure you.

Once I’d recovered from the shock of my new “waxing” technique, I indulged in another round of hydrotherapy: cold plunge, sauna, and steam – a blissful routine for both body and soul.

In the afternoon, I took a gentle two-mile stroll, not in any particular hurry, just letting the world drift by as I went. A wonderfully peaceful way to spend the day, if you ask me. So here’s to many more days filled with laughter, a few surprises, and steady progress towards that Half Marathon finish line!

Going round in circles all the time

Another early start, but hey—thanks to the clocks going back, I had the luxury of feeling like I’d gained a magical hour of sleep (or at least that’s what I told myself as I rolled out of bed).

Today’s run was an easy one, clocking in at 5.4 miles of gloriously low-intensity, zone-2 cardio. After weaving my way down Folly Lane, I arrived at the gates of Pointon's Park and was delighted to find them open! The plan? Laps. Lots of laps. I like to think of it as giving the locals a scenic show of determination, sweat, and a whole lot of questionable running faces all whilst breathing like a locomotive.

Showered up and fresh-faced (okay, fresh-ish), I was off to Uttoxeter for my figure skating lesson. Because, obviously, I thought, "Why just train for a half marathon when I could also practice spinning and gliding on a knife’s edge?” Genius, right? Today’s lesson was all about mastering circles and those dreaded backwards lemons. Let me tell you, my calves were absolutely baffled. They’ve seen some action over the years, but moving like that? Oh no, they're still confused. Hopefully they will start to click next week.

Post-lesson, I figured, why not go for a 2.5-mile walk and sneak in another hour of skating? Yes, I know. I, too, question my decision-making sometimes, as does my fitbit because whilst it was happy to record the GPS data for my run, i t had had enough when it came to recording the walk!

Now, let’s talk about priorities—namely, treating myself to Warburtons cinnamon bread. If heaven came sliced, toasted, and dusted with cinnamon, this would be it so I treated myself when I got home and to round things off? A hydrotherapy session, cold plunge sauna and steam to revive my well-worn muscles. Because if I’m going to torture myself training, I might as well go full luxury on the recovery especially given the improvement in my strength score.

Saturday Morning Run in Hyperspace

No Snooze Button Here: My 6:30 AM Torchlit Adventure

Today, while most people were still snoozing, I was hitting the road by 6:30 AM, decked out like a Christmas tree. I live so far out in the sticks that streetlights are something of a mythical creature; the nearest one is a good mile away. So, it was all about the head torch, chest torch, and enough reflective gear to give passing cars a good UFO sighting story.

Running in early morning drizzle with a head torch was… an experience. Turns out, drizzle looks totally different under torchlight – kind of like I was about to jump into hyperspace, Star Wars style. Sure, at 11 minutes per mile, I’m light years from “light speed,” but let me have my moment. No Death Star or asteroid field in sight, but hey, crazier things have happened.

I was taking it easy today, though, since Thursday’s club run saw me eat pavement – yes, I’m that runner. Falling over is practically my superpower at this point, and I’m now officially on the club “falling over” rota. (Pro tip: buy shares in Elastoplast now before they spike in sales.)

Sadly, my Fitbit decided it was way too early to cooperate. Apparently, 6:30 AM is when it goes on strike, GPS data and all. So, while there’s no proof of my route, trust me – I did a solid Zone 2 workout with just over 5 miles as seen by the data it did manage to record.

London Landmarks Half Marathon for Combat Stress

I started running on April 7th 2024 because of some health related news related to my heart, you are also aware that I was widowed 16 years ago when my beloved husband took his own life, undiagnosed PTSD was a contributory factor in this as was a severe head injury.

Adrian can't run anymore, but I now can. I got to spend 13 years with him, so I get to run 1 mile for every year we had.

I have never run a half marathon, in fact the thought of it terrifies me, though not as much as the first day I woke up as a widow, this is my first half marathon and I am already training for it. It is a big undertaking as currently the furthest I have ever run is 8 miles. This isn’t something that I can just “do” or have been doing for a long time, it is a learning curve and a training program, which will no doubt involve lats of falls, picking myself up and dusting myself off and trying again.

I will be running London Landmarks Half Marathon on April 6th 2025.

Please will you consider sponsoring me so that other people do not go through the heart break and grief that I have. Please help me stop people being like me.

Even £1 makes a difference, and it is the gesture rather than the amount:

£8

Could fund an art therapy

session for one veteran at one

of combat stress's treatment centres.

£19

Could fund our 24-hour

Helpline for one hour.

£35

Could pay for a veteran to have

a one-to-one peer support session.
